MontaVista Offers Linux for Android Platform

MontaVista Software, a provider of embedded Linux commercialization, announced that it will support developers running MontaVista Linux for use with the Google Android platform.
The company demonstrated the Android mobile platform running on a TI OMAP3 processor, one of the processors supported by MontaVista Linux, at the recently-held Embedded Technology 2008 in Yokohama, Japan.

"Over 50 million handsets have been powered by MontaVista Linux, making it the leading Linux OS in the mobile device market," said Joerg Bertholdt, vice president of marketing of MontaVista. "We are bringing MontaVista Linux's advanced features and hardware support, along with our professional Linux support, to developers of Android devices to help device manufacturers embrace the Android platform and bring innovative handsets to market quickly.

"MontaVista Linux is a mature, mobile device platform that is in use today in the majority of production mobile devices based on Linux. We expect MontaVista Linux, combined with our world-class support, to become the Linux platform to power Android devices across a variety of new hardware platforms."
